Isle Of Palms, SC is a barrier Island that lies just outside of Charleston, SC. Originally known as Hunting Island then was changed Long Island. It was a first settled and occupied by the Sewee Indians. The Isle has a long and storied history dating back to pre-Civil War times. It was during the Civil War that the first submersible (submarine) vessel the H. L. Hunley was launched from the area known as Breach Inlet on the south-western end of the Isle.

In the late 19th century Charlestonians began to use the Isle as a vacationing spot. It was a short ferry ride from Charleston or trolley from Mount Pleasant. The cool ocean breeze and Atlantic Ocean were a great relief from the oppressive summers in downtown Charleston. In 1906 a Hotel was built on the Isle and in 1912 a beach pavilion and amusement park were constructed. It was in 1929 that a bridge was built from Charleston to Mount Pleasant that which allowed automobile traffic to first reach the Isle.

Most of the original modern day homes that dotted the Isle were houses that were built and occupied by World War II veterans under a plan developed by JC Long. It was in 1975 the Sea Pines Company established a 900 acre resort known as Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club and is known today simply as Wild Dunes.

Isle of Palms is 7 miles long and 1 mile wide at its widest point. The total area is 5.4 square miles. The Isle it is framed by the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Intracoastal waterway to the North.

It has become a favorite destination for many people who are looking for a sub-tropical getaway or to own and Isle property. Homes range from Beachfront to Golf Course front to Intracoastal front. There are over 800 short term rental properties on the Isle Of Palms and homes range in price from just under $100,000 for a fractional ownership to a recent all time high of $6+ million.
